College application essays are the most important essays that you’ll be writing in your high school career. They determine where you spend the next four years, which can seem really scary. In reality, you decide where you want to go because only you can impress the college essay readers. The most important tip I can give you is to be organized about writing your essays.
Personally, I made myself a calendar that showed when I was going to write each essay, especially since I applied to a lot of colleges. With this calendar, I had to be realistic about how much I was going to write at a time, trying to finish all of my essays as early as possible yet not overwhelm myself with work.
Finding this balance of working hard without overwhelming yourself could be the hardest part about writing essays for college. Just know that only you can decide how much effort you want to put toward getting into college.
And if all of this is too much, just ask for help. There are plenty of people around you who would love to help with organizing, planning, and forming a strategy to get into any college you want. I went to a family friend who is a guidance counselor at American Heritage, and she helped me outline my calendar and all of my essays for the next couple of months.
I would highly recommend finding a mentor to help you out with all of this planning, even if it is just one of your parents. If I could leave you with one thing, it would be to try and be reasonable with planning your schedule while starting as early as you can. By this time last year, I had already finished one of my applications already. Get ahead of the game.
