Trying to cook on campus can seem like a hassle because if you live in a dorm then you most likely have a meal plan; if you love to cook then here are some tips for successful dorm cooking.
Before you can start to cook, you should go grocery shopping. Most college kids hate this for 1 of 2 reasons: You either don’t have a car and are scrambling for rides to the grocery store, or you have a car and every time you mention the word Publix 5 people appear and all ask if they can come with you. To solve this issue, try and coordinate with your roommates to go, take a bus, or Uber (if you can afford it).
If you have a car and don’t like giving rides 5 times a week, just tell your friends that they can go with you the next time you’re headed to the store. Once you get groceries, you can start to cook. At some dorms, the kitchen can be intimidating because there are always people there, and it’ll seem like you’re cooking in front of an audience. Some people can handle the heat, but others need to get out of the kitchen (pun intended). But before you go in to cook just know what you want and have a plan. The more organized you are, the more likely you won’t burn your food.
Finally, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Ask you roommate, kids on your floor, or even your RA for cooking tips. Your RA will for sure help you or point you in the right direction, most RA’s want to be as helpful as possible. And my most important piece of advice: call you mom before you google something about cooking. She’ll appreciate it way more than you think, and she probably has the right answer anyways.
