Going off to college is a huge deal to you and your family. For many of you, college will be the first time you are away from your parents for such a long time. Believe me, they will miss you just as much as you miss them. Before college, you were a part of their everyday life. You would see them every day, and interact with them every day. That all changes when you arrive at your chosen university.
In college, you see your family once every 2-3 months (depending on how far away you are from them). Going away to college requires you and your parents to adapt to this new lifestyle, and a call home can really raise you and your family’s spirits about you being away.
I call home at least once a week. My entire family eats dinner with each other at my grandma’s house on Sunday nights, so that's the best time to call. Those calls normally last between 25-35 minutes, just because we enjoy talking to each other so much. I let them know how classes are, what activities I’ve been participating in around campus, and how the football game was on Saturday. If I ever feel down, or if I’ve had a bad week, I can always rely on that phone call with my family to make me feel better.
It is very important to keep your family updated on your life in college because they will always be interested in what you have to say. I really cannot stress it enough how important it is for you to call home. Your family has helped build you into the person you are today, and without them, who knows where you would be. My family is the most important thing in my life, and a simple call home makes a huge difference in my life. When you go to college, please don’t forget to call home.
